Tap to Pay on iPhone

This is how to accept a payment using Tap to Pay on iPhone — the customer holds their contactless card, iPhone, or Apple Watch against the back of your iPhone, and FleetLoop charges it through your connected payment provider. Tap to Pay is a feature of the FleetLoop iPhone app only; it isn’t available from a computer or the web version of FleetLoop.

  • You need an iPhone with the FleetLoop app installed, signed in as staff.
  • Your shop needs Stripe, Square, or Dejavoo (iPOSpays) connected under Settings → Payments — see Payment integrations. If you’re on Dejavoo (iPOSpays), your merchant code must also be entered.
  • Only the shop owner can turn Tap to Pay on for the shop the first time. Everyone else sees a message asking them to have an owner or admin do it.
  • Your iPhone needs a current version of iOS. If it’s too old, FleetLoop tells you to update before you can use Tap to Pay.
  1. The first time you open a rental’s payment screen, FleetLoop shows a one-time introduction: “Accept physical debit and credit cards as well as Apple Pay and other digital wallets. Right on your iPhone.” Tap Set up Tap to Pay on iPhone to continue, or Not now to decide later.

  1. If you’re the shop owner, tapping Set up Tap to Pay on iPhone opens Apple’s terms — accept them to turn Tap to Pay on for your shop. If you’re not the owner, you’ll see a message asking you to have an owner or admin turn it on instead, from Settings → Payments → Tap to Pay on iPhone.

  1. During a rental’s checkout, on the How is the customer paying? screen, tap the gold Tap to Pay on iPhone button at the top of the list.

  1. FleetLoop gets the card reader ready, then asks you to hold the customer’s contactless card, iPhone, or Apple Watch flat against the top of your iPhone. Keep it there until you see a checkmark.

  1. If the card asks for a PIN, hand your iPhone to the customer to enter it — the PIN screen supports VoiceOver and other iOS accessibility features so they can enter it privately.
  2. Once the payment finishes, FleetLoop shows Approved with the amount charged, and offers Send receipt so you can text or email the customer a copy. Tap Done to close the screen.

The screen shows a green checkmark and Approved with the amount charged, and the payment appears on the rental’s Payments tab like any other card payment.

Payment declined. Try again, or ask the customer for a different card. You can still send a receipt showing the decline.

Timed out — no card was detected. Hold the card, phone, or watch flat against the top of your iPhone and try again.

“This iPhone can’t run Tap to Pay on iPhone,” or an update message. Your iPhone or its iOS version doesn’t support Tap to Pay — update iOS under Settings → General → Software Update on the phone, or use another payment method for this rental.

You don’t see the Tap to Pay button, or it asks you to set up again. Ask the shop owner to turn on Tap to Pay under Settings → Payments → Tap to Pay on iPhone — it needs a connected Stripe, Square, or Dejavoo (iPOSpays) account. If there’s no Tap to Pay option there at all, it hasn’t been enabled for your account yet — contact support.
